E agora, você está de férias e precisar comunicar este fato aos seus contatos comerciais. Como em português, via de regra, as palavras que terminam em S estão no plural, a tendência é de usarmos, em inglês, a forma de “vacation” no plural – vacations.

Cuidado, pois não é bem assim. Esta palavra é enganadora, tanto em inglês como em português. Em português FÉRIA significa

1. Bras. Com. Econ. Dinheiro que um comerciante apura pela venda de seus produtos ou serviços; LUCRO; RENDA: Guardou a féria do dia.

2. Bras. Econ. Remuneração (diária) por trabalho realizado: O taxista conseguiu uma boa féria.

3. Bras. Econ. O conjunto dos salários da semana

4. Litu. No calendário litúrgico, dia em que não se comemora festa especial.

[F.: Do lat. feria, ae, sing. de feriae, arum, 'dias de descanso' .]

 

Já FÉRIAS significa

1. Dias consecutivos para descanso de trabalhadores e de estudantes, após um período anual ou semestral de atividade (férias regulares; férias de meio de ano).

Em inglês é um pouco mais simples: VACATION equivale a 1 período de férias e VACATIONS equivale a mais de 1 período de férias.

Se você quiser dizer “eu estou de férias” você deverá dizer “I am on vacation”.

Na frase “eu sempre passo as minhas férias em Garopaba” nós estamos nos referindo a mais de 1 período de férias, portanto vamos ter que usar VACATIONS: I always spend my vacations in Garopaba.

Na resposta automática do seu e-mail escreva:

I will be on vacation from the 1st of February to the 1st of March. Or

I will be on vacation from February 1 to March 1.

E ainda existe o problema da pronúncia: ao contrário do que acontece em espanhol e francês, em inglês, as duas letras A da palavra VACATION não tem som de A e sim de EI: [vaikeishãn].

Nada melhor do que estudar um segundo idioma para abrir os horizontes e se certificar de que nem tudo que brilha é ouro. Exceto, viajar, é claro, mas para viajar tranquilo, você precisa saber inglês.
